The product description says this pedal aims to recreate the sound of the Big Muff, specifically the big green Russian-made version. I don't have a Sovtek on hand, but I do have a vintage Big Muff circa the 1990s, so I was able to put them side-by-side.So were they able to succeed?I'd say yes! The Harby BMF has all the gritty, throbbing crunch of the Big Muff, but with less noise in the signal and a cleaner sound when you've dialed down the settings. It sounds terrific. I found it really easy to dial in some grungy '90s distortion, '60s fuzz, and '00s indie fuzz. Really love the nice, soft way it breaks up the signal. The sound is a little less dirty than my BM, but mine is also around 30 years old and has seen tons of use, so that isn't surprising.Knobs are responsive, sweep through a good array of tones -- you have WAY more control of your tone than the budget knock-offs I've tried -- and they feel sturdy enough for regular gigging. Same with the heavy duty footswitch. The metal case also feels well made and able to withstand daily use. The look is low key and subdued. Nice aesthetic. It's not as large as my classic Big Muff but isn't a mini pedal, either. It's got roughly the size profile of a Boss pedal, footswitch and knobs included.Harby are newcomers to the game, with only one other pedal out so far, a Klon clone. Based on this one, I'd say they're off to a good start!
